SENIOR CONSULTANT RADIOLOGIST
Professor Michael G. Kawooya is professor emeritus in the Department of Radiology at the School of Medicine, Makerere University, and College of Health Sciences. He is director of ECUREI, an ultrasound-training institute. He also serves as the chairman board of governors for Kampala MRI center.
Additionally, he is director of the Centre of Excellence of the World Federation in Ultrasound in Medicine and
Biology (WFUMB) in Kampala. In 1988, Prof. Kawooya received his masters’ degree in medicine in radiology from Makerere University, ten years later, he completed his PhD. He also did a fellowship in radiology at Ebert Karls Universiteit in Tübingen, Germany, from 1989 to 1991, and a fellowship in ultrasound at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, U.S., in 2001. His area of research is ultrasound and he has tackled every aspect of its practice. He has published over 55 articles in peer- reviewed journals, as well as five chapters in books on different topics, including imaging of tropical diseases.
Prof. Kawooya has served in key roles for prestigious societies, notably as secretary general of the African Society of Radiology and as a member of the WFUMB administrative council. He is a founding member and past president of the Uganda Society for the Advancement of Radiology and Imaging. He initiated the creation of several federations, congresses majorly in the ultrasound area like the Pan African Congress of Radiology and Imaging.
Prof. Kawooya sits on the editorial board of Ultrasound, a journal of the British Ultrasound Society. He holds membership in various radiological societies in Uganda, as well as the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Among the distinctions he has received are, the Mulago Hospital and Complex Certificate of Merit and Innovativeness in 2007, the Association of Radiologists of Uganda Special Award in 2014, the PACORI Distinguished Service Award in 2013 and honorary fellowship of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in March at ECR 2019, the Honorary Membership of the European Society of Radiology
